Do I need to get any shots?
No. There is no shots needed to travel to Mozambique.
What you choose to take is up to each individual client but Samantha and I have not gotten nor will get shots to travel to Moz.
Do I have to take malaria medicine?
No. You do not have to take Malaria medication.
Again, what a client chooses is up to them.
Yes, we are in a Malaria zone, but our shore breeze tends to keep all the malaria-born mosquitoes to stay inland.
There is anti-malaria medicine available at local pharmacies that we will source if any client shows any symptoms.
Clients need to remember this is the real and wild Africa and things can always happen, but as of the date of this writing, neither my wife nor I nor any client has ever gotten malaria while on vacation in Mozambique.
Mozambique runs on a currency called Meticals MTZ. It is roughly 63/1 USD.
You can pay the remainder of your balance and tip in USD cash (CHECK YOUR BILLS ARE DATED 2013 OR NEWER).
The captain can be tipped directly by client.
All staff tips can be given in USD directly to us (Samantha and I).
We will then split the tips equally and evenly to the entire staff.
It is a Moz cultural thing that all staff are treated the same.
The boat can comfortably fit 2-4 clients.
We can take a maximum of 6 on Cujo, but it does get cramped with the crew and gear, especially when a big fish on the line.
Although the mighty Cujo is a BIG 32-foot boat and fishes like a 36’ because of the catamaran style, the Indian Ocean is known for huge currents and rough seas.
We do get our fair share of nice and calm days, but more often than not, we are fishing in slight chop.
We recommend that all clients prepare before their trip and take all necessary precautions.
How far offshore do you fish?
It is approximately 20-25 minutes to “lines in” each morning, as we either fish the northern lighthouse section off Bazaruto, or head south through the gap between Bazaruto Benguara Island.
From this point, we will most likely be fishing the rich bill fishing waters within a few miles off the islands.
While Black Marlin fishing, we are located right up against the Islands of Bazaruto or Benguera and fish shallow (120 ft-400 ft).
While Blue Marlin fishing we are located a bit further off Bazaruto Island in deeper waters but still within sight of Bazaruto.
What does the average day of fishing look like?
We will start our days fishing depending on certain factors like tides, weather, and location.
Most days start with an early rise of 6 am, quick coffee and toast before we shore transfer to Cujo for our journey to the fishing grounds.
We will fish from sunup to near sundown every day and return to Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort for evening showers and dinner.
Bazaruto is truly a legendary fishery with a massive season that spans many different types of bill fishing.
May through July is normally excellent Sailfishing around Bazaruto, with numbers like 20 raises not unheard of in a day.
May through December is always good Blue Marlin fishing in the deep waters around Baz and many of our clients will dip out to the deep after we have picked up a few sailfish in the morning to try and hang a few different flags in a day.
August through the end of December is Black Marlin territory, with the peak months normally coming in September, October, and November.
It is not uncommon to fly a Black, Blue, and Sailfish flags on the same day during those fall heavy tackle season.
Bazaruto is a next-level Marlin fishing destination. Our averages over the past few seasons are approximately .75 CATCHES a day for Black/Blue marlin in the fall heavy tackle season.
Double and Triple flags are common with many Black/Blue combo days.
Of course, it is fishing, and we have gone a week or more without catching a fish, but it’s incredibly rare we don’t put our client at least on one nice marlin during their trip with us at Mozambique Sportfishing.
As I say to clients, nobody wants you to catch a fish more than the crew at MozSF, it’s our passion and our reason for existence.
All billfish will be released unless the crew deems the fish to be close enough to the Grander mark (1000lbs) to hang it.
It will then be up to the client whether they choose to harvest the fish and bring it back to the mainland to weigh.
All hung billfish are donated to the local communities where its protein will feed many families and provide much-needed relief to such an impoverished area.
That is what makes this fishery so special. We are the Mike Tyson fishery of Africa.
Our average Black Marlin has been in the 450-500 pound class over the past few seasons, with our big fish averaging around the 800 pound mark most years.
We have caught a few over the prized Grander mark (1000 pounds,) and we will leave it up to the client if they want to harvest a fish of that size.
Don’t let the Blue Marlin quality here sneak up on you. We catch a Blue Marlin north of 700lbs every year, with our big fish of 2022 being an absolute beast of a Blue that was certainly close to the mark.
How experienced do I need to be to Marlin fish?
Marlin fishing is all about listening to the team around you and working with that team to accomplish the goal of catching you a fish of a lifetime.
Whether you are Pelagic’s Ron Kawaja or a first time female fisherman; It is our passion at Mozambique Sportfishing to work with each of our client’s strengths and overcome their weaknesses as a team to accomplish their goal of catching an ocean God.
Can we target other species if we no longer want to billfish?
We completely understand Marlin fishing is the most boring thing in the world…… until it’s not, haha.
That being said, we can certainly gear down to our 30 class reels or the Talica 25s for some lighter game action such as Dorado, Wahoo, Tuna, to name a few.
We highly recommend that if we are on the hunt for Marlin, we try and keep the amount of rods and equipment in the water to increase our chances of catching a big fish if it takes one of our marlin baits.
It’s all about how quickly we can get on a big fish, seconds may mean the difference between a catch and a loss, and the less amount of gear to put away while the client is getting in the chair preparing the fight, the better.
If traveling through Johannesburg on the way into Moz you will most likely need to spend a night at a local hotel or safari lodge near the airport to return for your morning flight into VNX.
We have many options for these guests and will gladly help coordinate for the client.
If checking your luggage directly through to VNX from your American point of origin, make sure your needed toiletries and clothing stay in your carry-on.
They will store the luggage at JNB airport and will automatically load it for you in the morning. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED ACCESS TILL YOU REACH VNX.
If you purchased your JNB and VNX flights separately, your bags will be available for pickup at JNB, and you can take them to your overnight stay.
Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique is a Big Game, Jurassic Park type fishery where legends can be created at a moment’s notice.
The largest marlin caught off Moz was 1289 pounds, with sightings of much bigger fish abound.
This fishery is for those adventure seekers who want to explore the uncharted and carve their name on the foundation of something legendary.
